Mission: Youth

With a commitment to God’s Word and a love for the next generation, we strive to invest in the lives of 6th–12th graders during one of the most crucial stages of their lives and partner with parents as they raise and release the next generation of faithful saints.

Here’s how.

Disciple.

Making and growing disciples is commanded by Jesus Himself (Matt. 28:19-20). There are varying levels of Christian maturity present in every church community (1 Jn. 2:12-14), but mature believers are instructed to invest in younger believers. Mission: Youth comes alongside parents in this task in two ways:

  • The teaching of God’s Word is one of the primary ways that we pursue students’ spiritual growth. Moving beyond the objective of merely filling their heads with information, we teach and preach with the goal of seeing the Lord move the hearts of the students as they learn and apply Scripture to everyday life.

  • Discipleship Groups exist to foster the growth and maturity of the saints at Mission Bible Church through biblical discipleship, which promotes ongoing growth in the likeness of Christ and ensures the unity and holiness of MBC. Mission: Youth provides a Discipleship Group format that is specifically crafted for ages 12–18 and is based upon the teaching that takes place at the Wednesday evening gatherings.

Connect.

Fellowship is an essential aspect of life within the body of Christ. Mission: Youth seeks to provide avenues for the next generation to come together, foster meaningful friendships, and participate in one another’s lives while growing in their understanding of Scripture and the fear of the Lord.

  • Wednesday Evenings are dedicated to the next generation as the Mission: Youth ministry meets on campus to worship the Lord by singing praises to Him and growing under teaching from His Word.

  • Whether they are new to the church or have been around for several years, Youth Gather Events are a simple way for the Jr. High and High school-age students of Mission Bible Church to come together for fellowship and foster new relationships with other like-minded Christians.

Serve.

Each believer has been given gifts to glorify God and edifying His church (Rom. 12:6–8; 1 Cor. 12: 4–11, 28). Mission: Youth spurs young believers to engage the body of Christ with these gifts. Whether it be an evangelism day or a Sunday morning role, each student is encouraged to be involved in ministry.

  • Sunday morning provides several ministry opportunities for students to participate in. From serving as helpers in the Pre-K classrooms to passing out bulletins to helping to direct traffic or operating the slides during service, we encourage each individual to jump in and serve the body of Christ.

  • Students are not only encouraged to engage in Sunday morning ministry but to also participate in Saturday outreach. Many our the youth take to the streets of Costa Mesa with family and friends to deliver the soul-saving Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Our Mission

Partner with Parents. makE disciples.

Mission: Youth includes 6th–12th grade students. Our mission is clear: partner with parents and make disciples. Because we believe that Scripture is clear that parents are the primary disciple-makers in the lives of their children, our hope is to partner with parents in their pursuit of this mission, coming alongside them in the discipleship process. We do this in many ways, but our primary focus is a six-year process of integrating the next generation into the church body. Through clear Bible teaching, partnering youth with mentors, and engaging in youth-based discipleship groups, and intentional communication to bridge home and church, we support parents who are seeking to raise up their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Eph. 6:4).

Expectations.

  • Our ministry philosophy is based on the biblical command on parents to act as primary disciple-makers of their children (cf. Eph. 6:4). Based on this, we expect the home to be a model of Christian discipleship that prioritizes the Godward orientation of the next generation. This prioritization includes but is not limited to family worship, catechizing in central doctrines, regular prayer, accountability, and influence upon the mind.

We are fully aware many children are raised in broken homes or unbiblical homes and will outreach accordingly. However, a church is designed to gather for growth and then scatter to witness, so our primary objective is the maturity of the saints. Due to the recent surge of immoral instruction from the secular school system we advocate various forms of private school or home school while understanding this is not feasible for every family. Further, we advocate the biblical model of the father providing for the home while the mother remains home with school-aged children to provide instruction and accountability.

Because we are a continuation ministry, receiving parents from Mission: Kids, we heartily recommend parents read and implement the parenting forms prescribed in “Shepherding a Child’s Heart” by Tedd Tripp and “Age of Opportunity” by Paul Tripp.

  • Although we are aware of the modern paradigm regarding adolescence, we do not agree with this definition, specifically that a young adult should be allowed multiple years (e.g., age 13-24) to experiment, party, act immaturely, blame hormones, disrespect authority, or be monetarily funded by parents or the state for loose living. We argue that a healthy biblical worldview condones children trained to engage the world as adults by their teenage years. To this end, we expect the youth to join in Sunday corporate worship, participate in small groups, and begin serving in ministry.

  • Our goal is that students will graduate from the ministry but never graduate from the body of Christ. We expect many to stay right here in Orange County and continue as the next generation of leaders for Mission: Youth. By the time young adults are ready to graduate, a Youth leads will sit with them and assess whether they can provide a biblical assessment of the following:

    Personal Holiness
    • Avoidance of habitual sin
    • Spiritual disciplines, and ordinances
    • Controlled temper and tongue
    • Stewardship, debt, budgeting
    • No vices, addictions, etc.

    Holy Home
    • Importance of marital purity
    • Loving husband, respectful wife
    • How to raise their future children
    • Importance of family worship

    Public Rapport
    • Consistently joyful outlook
    • Regular attendance and ministry
    • Respectful dress
    • Respectful of authority
    • Kindly offers opinion and input

    Theology
    • Clear Gospel presentation
    • Name books and genres of Scripture
    • Systematized theology

  • As parents provide primary discipleship for their students, it is the role of the church to support and equip them in this multi-decade process. The key to this statement is the word "support," which is far different from the modern form of institutional youth ministry that acts as a replacement for the home. The task of an excellent student ministry is to offer parents resources and assistance that aligns with and mirrors the biblical doctrine being taught in the home.

  • Mission: Youth aims to provide an avenue for students to gather with their peers under the preaching and teaching of God's Word, worship, and discipleship groups during the midweek gathering. By utilizing weeknights for youth-focused ministry: (1) students are provided with an opportunity to grow in the word and faith as well as build relationships with like-minded teens, and (2) they are integrated into Sunday worship and provided with opportunities to serve with the larger church body. Alongside the midweek gathering, Mission: Youth offers frequent events to help students connect and develop long-lasting Christian relationships.

  • Youth ministry leaders are church members who have been vetted by church leadership to support the Family Pastor and Youth Ministry Coordinator in the mission to assist families in producing teenage disciples. Each leader will be granted a cohort of 3-4 families and engage their youth weekly to offer biblical counsel and encouragement aligning with the parents' preset objectives. All Youth leaders have been background checked and have also undergone Sexual Abuse Awareness Training.

JOIN US EVERY WEDNESDAY.

Gathering every Wednesday evening at 6:30 PM in the lobby of Building A at Mission Bible Church, Mission: Youth is the place to be for Jr. High and High School students. Come with a Bible, notebook, and pen in hand as we turn to the Scriptures together.

FAMILY MINISTRIES

You are as much serving God in looking after your own children, & training them up in God’s fear, & minding the house, & making your household a church for God, as you would be if you had been called to lead an army to battle for the Lord of hosts.

- Charles Spurgeon
